Shoes for Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia is pain around the ball of the foot, where a tight forefoot or a thin, hard sole can make standing and walking uncomfortable.

We selected these metatarsalgia shoes to create usable space around the forefoot and provide a cushioned, structured platform beneath it. Depending on the model, that may include a wide or deep toe box, a soft or stretch upper, a removable cushioned footbed, metatarsal support or a rocker sole that changes how the shoe rolls through the step. The collection offers different ways to accommodate the foot because pain under the ball of the foot does not have one single cause.

More about our shoes for metatarsalgia

To choose, look at the sole and the forefoot. A rocker sole moves the roll-through point forward, so the forefoot bends less at push-off; a flat sole keeps you lower and more stable. Then check the toe box: if the ache comes with a bunion joint or a spreading forefoot, take the wide toe-box or stretch-front models. Our insole lifts out of every pair if you wear your own.

What a metatarsal dome does

Selected models use a raised, tear-drop shaped support moulded into the footbed and positioned behind the metatarsal heads rather than directly under them. A support that presses directly on a painful area may be uncomfortable, so its position should be checked carefully.

Rocker sole shoes for forefoot pain

A rocker sole is curved rather than flat along its length. It moves the point where the foot rolls forward, so the forefoot flexes less at the end of each step. Several models in this collection are built on one; the product page says which.

Wide fit shoes for metatarsalgia, EE to 6E

Four fittings on our own lasts. A wider fitting keeps the same length and adds width and depth across the forefoot, so the foot can spread rather than being squeezed narrower with every step.

Questions we are asked

Where should a metatarsal pad sit?

Behind the ball of the foot, not on it. If you can feel the dome pressing directly on the sore spot, it is too far forward — worth checking with a podiatrist.

Do all your shoes have this insole?

No. We use two removable footbeds: a 6 mm everyday option and a 1 cm moulded option. Models in this collection may use either; check the individual product specification to see which footbed and support features are supplied.

Can I put my own orthotic in instead?

Yes. Lift ours out; the depth underneath is what makes room for yours.

Pain under the ball of the foot has several possible causes and they are treated differently. If it has not settled, see a podiatrist rather than working through it in new shoes.
